What is an agentic development platform?
An agentic development platform is software in which AI coding agents carry a change through the whole software development lifecycle: they plan it, build it on an isolated branch, check it, and take it on through review, merge and deployment to production, under rules a person sets.
It is not a platform for building AI agents. There, the agents are the product. Here, coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex or Cursor build yours.

How the term is used
Agentic development, or agentic software development, is building software with AI agents that do the work rather than only suggest it. Google Cloud describes agentic coding, its core, as "a software development approach where autonomous AI agents plan, write, test, and modify code with minimal human intervention".1 An agentic development platform is what turns that way of working into the way a whole product gets built and shipped. The phrase is used in three ways.
For products. Google used the phrase in November 2025 when it launched Antigravity as "a new agentic development platform" in which agents "autonomously plan, execute, and verify complex tasks across your editor, terminal, and browser".2 Thoughtworks uses it for AI/works, which it defines as "an AI-powered software engineering platform that uses coordinated AI agents to support the entire software development lifecycle - not just code generation".3
For a market. In July 2026 Forrester published The Agentic Development Platforms Landscape, Q3 2026, an analyst overview of 25 solutions. Its definition draws the same two lines this page does: agentic development platforms "are not general-purpose platforms for anyone to build any type of AI agent, nor are they application generation platforms" for making apps through prompts, vibe coding or low-code; "they are software development platforms that use agentic AI to help teams build software of all kinds". Forrester expects vendors to compete less on coding assistance alone and more on orchestration, enterprise context, governance, model agility, cost transparency and connecting agents across the whole lifecycle, and it plans a Forrester Wave evaluation of the category for the fourth quarter of 2026.4
For platform engineering. Platform engineers have used the phrase for the next step of an internal developer platform: the platform a company's own platform team runs, extended "to support agent participation in software production".5 Weave Intelligence, whose chief executive introduced the idea there, now calls it an agentic engineering platform, one "built and operated by the platform engineering team".6
All three share the idea that separates a platform from a coding assistant: the agents do not stop at writing code. They plan, verify and carry the work on through the lifecycle, and a person decides what ships. This page uses the meaning Google, Thoughtworks and Forrester share: a platform on which coding agents build and ship your software.
What an agentic development platform does
Tools differ in how far they go, but a platform worth the name covers these seven steps. Each one is something you can check for yourself.
- Takes a request in plain words. You describe the outcome you want; the agent plans the work and asks only what is yours to decide.
- Isolates every change. Each request gets its own workspace and its own branch, so several agents can work at once without editing over each other.
- Verifies the work. The project's own tests and checks run on the change, and a preview lets you open the running result instead of reading a diff.
- Lets a person decide what merges. Each project has a rule: merge when the checks pass, wait for approval, or stop at the branch.
- Delivers it. An approved change is deployed through the project's own deployment, and can be rolled back to the last version that worked.
- Watches production. Health after the deploy is part of the job, because code that passed review can still fail once it is live.
- Keeps the context. Instructions, skills and memory carry from one run to the next, so each agent starts from what the project already knows.
Why the lifecycle matters more than the code
Writing code is the part coding agents already do well. The 2026 surveys point at what comes after it. In Sonar's survey of over 1,100 developers, 96% do not fully trust AI-generated code, and only 48% always verify it before committing.7 New Relic found that 94% of technology leaders rate AI-generated code as higher quality than human-written code at the moment it is reviewed, yet 82% suffered at least one major production failure caused by AI code in the previous six months.8
An agentic development platform puts checks, a preview, a merge rule and a way back between the agent and the people who use your product.
How it differs from related tools
Six kinds of tools sit close to each other, and vendors use the names loosely. Augment Code, for example, defines an agentic development environment broadly enough to reach deployment and production monitoring.9 This is how the names are most often used, and where each kind of tool usually stops.
| Kind of tool | What it is for | How far the work goes | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI coding assistant | Suggests and edits code inside your editor while you type. | Your editor, with you at the keyboard. | GitHub Copilot, Cursor's editor |
| Coding agent | Takes a task and works through it alone: reads the code, edits files, runs commands. | Changes on a computer, or a pull request. | Claude Code, Codex, Cursor's agent, Gemini CLI |
| Agentic development environment | A workspace for running several coding agents at once and reviewing what they return. | A branch or pull request you review. | Warp, Intent, Conductor |
| Agentic development platform | Carries each change through the lifecycle: isolated branches, checks, previews, merge rules, deployment, rollback and production health. | The whole lifecycle, by definition. Check how far each one really goes. | Google Antigravity, Thoughtworks AI/works, Iterada |
| AI app builder | Turns a prompt into a hosted app on the builder's own stack. | A hosted app on the builder's platform. | Lovable, Bolt, v0, Replit |
| AI agent development platform | Building AI agents and agent workflows that become your product. | An agent you run for your own users. | LangChain, CrewAI, Dify |
The last row is the one most often confused with this one, and Gartner reviews it as a market of its own.10 If you want to build a support bot or an agent workflow, you want an AI agent development platform. If you want AI coding agents to build and ship your own product, you want an agentic development platform.
How to tell whether a tool is one
Five questions separate a platform from the tools around it:
- Does every change get its own isolated workspace and branch?
- Can several agents work at the same time without colliding?
- Do your project's own checks run, with a preview you can open, before anything merges?
- Do you set the rule for what merges, project by project?
- Does it deploy the change, and can it roll it back?
A tool that answers yes to the first three is a strong agentic development environment. The last two are what make it a platform. One more question decides how much you keep: does it work with the repository, the Git host and the coding agent you already use, or does it ask you to move to its own?
Before you commit, Forrester advises buyers to start with a real pilot in their own toolchain, to ask how pricing and consumption work, and to require controls for data privacy, code ownership, auditability and human oversight.4 Two of the differences it expects to matter most are easy to test in that pilot: whether you can change the agent or model, and whether you can see what the model usage costs.
Agentic development platforms in 2026
The market is wider than the products that use the name. Forrester's 2026 landscape covers 25 solutions; its vendor list is in the report itself, and Bolt, which this page files with the app builders, says it is named there as a notable vendor.11 Three products describe themselves with this phrase, and they are compared here. None of them wins every team; they differ in where the agent runs, whom they serve, and how far past a pull request the lifecycle goes.
| Platform | Best for | Where agents run | Lifecycle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Antigravity | Builders in Google's stack who want a free desktop agent editor and CLI. | Your computer, with Google's harness across editor, terminal and browser. | Plan, execute and verify in the workspace; deployment is yours to wire. |
| Thoughtworks AI/works | Large organisations modernising legacy systems with services attached. | Delivered with Thoughtworks' own engagement model. | Coordinated agents across the software development lifecycle, sold with consulting. |
| Iterada | Founders and teams on Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Pi or opencode who need message to production in a browser. | An isolated server container per change, on your Git host. | Branch, checks, preview, merge rules, deploy, rollback and production health under rules you set. |
Roundups that list "best agentic development platform" often mix in AI agent development platforms (LangChain, CrewAI) or app builders (Lovable, Bolt). Those are different categories; the table in how it differs from related tools shows which is which.
Iterada, and where others are stronger
Iterada is an agentic development platform for founders and teams. You describe a change in a message, and a coding agent - Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Pi or opencode - makes it in an isolated container on its own Git branch. Your repository's own checks run, a preview is ready to open, and nothing merges or deploys except under the rule you set for the project. The agents run on the AI subscriptions you already pay for, with no markup on model usage, and if one agent's plan runs out, another can take over the same branch. It works with an existing repository on GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Gitea or Azure DevOps, or starts from scratch, and you run it from any browser or phone. The AI app builders stop earlier here: Lovable can export a project to GitHub but cannot import an existing repository,12 and Replit imports one from GitHub or Bitbucket13 but publishes it on its own hosting.14
Others are stronger in places, and it is worth knowing where:
- Google Antigravity puts the agents inside a desktop editor, which suits working at your own computer with the agent beside your code. Iterada runs on a server, so the work does not depend on your computer being on.
- Thoughtworks AI/works is delivered with Thoughtworks' own services and is built for organisations modernising large legacy systems.
- AI app builders such as Lovable reach a first hosted demo faster: one click, where Iterada takes a message and a deploy.
Questions people ask
What is an agentic development platform?
An agentic development platform is software in which AI coding agents carry a change through the whole software development lifecycle, not only write the code. Each change gets an isolated branch, the project's checks and a preview, and it merges, deploys, rolls back and is watched in production under rules a person sets. It is not a platform for building AI agents: the coding agents build your product.
What is agentic development?
Agentic development, or agentic software development, is building software with AI agents that plan, write, test and change the code themselves instead of only suggesting it, while people set the goal and decide what ships. An agentic development platform is the system around those agents that carries each change from the request to production.
How does Forrester define an agentic development platform?
Forrester defines agentic development platforms as software development platforms that use agentic AI to help teams build software of all kinds, from user interfaces and application logic to infrastructure and backends. It leaves out general-purpose platforms for building AI agents and application generation platforms that make apps from prompts, vibe coding or low-code. Its Agentic Development Platforms Landscape, Q3 2026 covers 25 solutions, and a Forrester Wave evaluation of the category is planned for the fourth quarter of 2026.
Is an agentic development platform the same as an agentic development environment?
The two overlap, and vendors use them loosely. An agentic development environment (ADE) is usually the workspace where you run several coding agents and review the branches they return. A platform also carries each change on through merge, deployment, rollback and production health. Some tools are called both: Google calls Antigravity an agentic development platform, and Augment Code lists it among agentic development environments.
Is an agentic development platform a platform for building AI agents?
No. Platforms for building AI agents, such as LangChain, CrewAI or Dify, are for making agents that become your product, and Gartner reviews them as a market of their own, AI agent development platforms. An agentic development platform uses AI coding agents to build and ship software you own.
Is an agentic development platform an internal developer platform?
Not in the sense Google, Thoughtworks and Forrester use. In platform engineering, the phrase has named the next step of an internal developer platform: the platform a company's own platform team builds so that agents can take part in software production, which Weave Intelligence now calls an agentic engineering platform. An agentic development platform in the sense this page uses is software a team adopts so that coding agents build and ship its product, without building that platform first.
What is the difference between a coding agent and an agentic development platform?
A coding agent, such as Claude Code, Codex or Cursor, does the work on a task: it reads the code, edits files and runs commands. An agentic development platform is everything around it: an isolated workspace for each change, several agents at once, checks, previews, merge rules, deployment, rollback and memory between runs. Some platforms bring their own agent; Iterada runs the coding agents you already use.
Do I need an agentic development platform if I already use Claude Code?
Not to write code: Claude Code already does that well. A platform earns its place when the work around the agent becomes the hard part: running several tasks at once without collisions, checking each change before it merges, and getting it to production, and back out again if something breaks.
Is there an alternative to Lovable or Replit that works with an existing repository?
Yes, but the app builders stop short of it. Lovable can export a project to GitHub but cannot import a repository you already have, and Replit imports one from GitHub or Bitbucket but publishes it on Replit's own hosting. Iterada works on an existing repository on GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Gitea or Azure DevOps, runs that repository's own checks, and deploys it through the workflows it already has. The app builders still reach a first hosted demo faster: one click, where Iterada takes a message and a deploy.
Which agentic development platforms are there?
Forrester's 2026 landscape of the market covers 25 solutions. Products that describe themselves this way include Google Antigravity, Thoughtworks AI/works and Iterada. They differ in how far they go and whom they serve: Antigravity is a desktop editor from Google, AI/works is delivered with Thoughtworks' services for large organisations, and Iterada runs Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Pi or opencode on your own repository, from any browser, for founders and teams.
What is the best agentic development platform?
It depends whom you serve. Google Antigravity suits builders who want a free desktop agent editor inside Google's stack. Thoughtworks AI/works fits large organisations modernising legacy systems with services attached. Iterada fits founders and teams who already use Claude Code, Codex or Cursor on their own repository and need the path from message to production in a browser, without moving to a vendor's cloud IDE.
How do I choose an agentic development platform?
Start with the five checks on this page: isolated branches, parallel agents, your own checks and a preview, merge rules you control, and deploy with rollback. Then ask whether it needs your Git host and coding agent or replaces them, and whether it stops at a pull request or runs the workflows your repository already owns through production. Before you commit, run a real pilot on your own repository, and check whether you can change the agent or model and see what the model usage costs.
